Devizes is brimming with independent shops, weekly general and collectors’ markets and regular farmers’ and continental markets bring added colour all in the stunning Market Place just outside The Bear.
Devizes’ Market Place also hosts many of the town’s coffee shops, shops and indoor market leading onto a pedestrianised shopping street, the Brittox. The town has many great attractions to visit during your stay including the famous Wadworth’s Brewery. A landmark at the north end of the Market Place just down the road from The Bear, the independent brewery houses a visitor centre where ales can be samples and tours of the brewery and famous shire horse stables can be booked.
Another must-see whilst in Devizes is the Kennet and Avon Canal including the spectacular Caen Hill flight of 29 locks leading up to Devizes. The flight was a major engineering feat when built at the end of the 18th Century. In the town, the Kennet & Avon Canal Trust Museum on the Wharf, overlooking the canal, tells the tale of the construction, operation, closure and restoration of the canal. The tow path from the Wharf leads to the locks and provides excellent views of the countryside. Boat hire and trips on the canal are available in the summer.
The Wiltshire Museum is just a short walk from The Bear. The Museum is rated as one of the top 3 visitor attractions in Wiltshire on TripAdvisor, with the best Bronze Age archaeology collection in England, it’s a must-see during your stay. The museum tells the story of Wiltshire and the town of Devizes and is open daily throughout most the year.
